The Kilcher family lives on a 600-acre homestead in Alaska. For four generations, they have lived off the land in a subsistence lifestyle. With another brutal winter quickly approaching, the entire homestead struggles to stockpile enough meat to last the next eight months. The family faces an unexpected crisis after discovering bears have killed two of the family's cattle. Atz Kilcher Sr. sets out to find the predator to protect the rest of the herd. Atz Lee, Atz Sr.'s son, is forced to pin all his hopes of surviving the winter on one last hunting trip; or else he will not be able to feed his wife and children.
