This book is an overview of the works of the artist that is Kepi, containing over 500 paintings, only a tiny part of his complete body of work.

Californian artist Kepi Ghoulie is probably best known for his rock ‘n’ roll group Groovie Ghoulies, with whom he recorded nine albums, as well as countless EP’s, singles and split releases and toured relentlessly all over this world between 1986 and 2007.

Some call the Groovie Ghoulies pop punk (for their songs are catchy and they released records on Lookout, which once was home for bands like Green Day, Screeching Weasel and The Queers as well), others thought of them as a garage band (because of the fuzzy guitars and the many 60’s covers), but anyway they were all about energy, simplicity and fun. Just like the art you’ll find in this book.

During the final years of Groovie Ghoulies, little paintings of wild eyed, bright colourful monsters started popping up between the records and T-shirts on the merch table. Kepi had started painting them as Christmas presents and liked doing them so much, he never stopped. Shortly after, he signed up for an art show at Kevin (of legendary hardcore band 7 Seconds) and Allyson Seconds’ True Love Coffeehouse and soon many other galleries followed.

After the Ghoulies broke up in 2007, Kepi started touring like never before, both acoustic (solo or with friends like Vic Ruggiero (The Slackers), Dr. Frank (MTX) and Kevin Seconds) and electric (backed by a band with an eternally changing line-up). His paintings became a bigger and bigger part of his output, up to the point where he and his artist friends would go on “Art Runs”, a touring art show, showing their paintings in a different city every night and playing some music while they’re at it.

Kepi’s painting is influenced by comic books and 2D animation in general and Tim Burton and Charles Addams (the cartoonist that created The Addams Family) in particular, but Kepi doesn’t let these influences get in the way of his authenticity, which makes his creatures and monsters look exactly like they do in The Independent Nation of Kepiland.

That authenticity, the fact he just does what he likes to do, painting fun monsters, gets Kepi to travel all across this world, making music, friends and a living, eating all of the chocolate and drinking all of the Kepiccino’s (that’s twice the chocolate and twice the caffeine) he cares to and making more and more of that “Bright and Simple Art for a Dark and Complicated World”, as he likes to describe his work himself.
