We are thrilled to welcome Brooklyn country crooner Dougie Poole to the Wharf Cat family with the announcement of his second LP The Freelancer's Blues. Lead single "Vaping on the Job" makes it clear that, on this release, Poole has graduated from the drum machine and synthesizer bedroom country experiments of his first album and moved on to a full band set-up featuring honky-tonk harmonies, wailing pedal steel, and carefully constructed arrangements that wholeheartedly embrace the country sound he only hinted at on his prior work. Produced by Jonathan Schenke (PC Worship, Gong Gong Gong, Public Practice), "Vaping On The Job" is a perfect encapsulation of Poole's ability to deftly bend the country idiom in order to tell stories that are true to his experience and those of his city-dwelling, romantically alienated, and financially precarious peers. Verse by verse he connects the dots between a delivery driver with an art degree, a midtown tech startup employee, and the bartender they both confide in - all with a blend of humor and earnest compassion that reverberates throughout the album's 9 songs. As he explains in his conversation with The FADER:

"A lot of people have to spend a lot of time at work pretending to be things they’re not. I think that a lot of the artists I know do this: 9am to 5pm, they’re hiding out all over New York City, doing their other jobs. For most of us, it’s just part of being an artist. But sometimes the work you do to sustain yourself, and your art, starts to take over and use all your energy. It can leave you feeling lost, out of touch with yourself. I wanted to write a song about that compromise, I guess."

About Dougie Poole

After coming of age in Providence, Rhode Island, Dougie Poole has long had ties to a wide array of artists in the experimental music scene. He toured nationally with Jerry Paper while playing in Paper's live band, and more recently appeared on Drugdealer's genre-spanning album Raw Honey,  drawing praise from Pitchfork for his "sad-eyed Elvis croon" on the track "Wild Motion."  Poole released his solo debut Wideass Highway in 2017, which was his first public experiment with country music and became an immediate favorite of publications like The FADER, who praised his ability to bring classic country songwriting into a "contemporary space" with an album that "articulated a generational self-consciousness." Exploring a hybrid of synth pop and country music, with a wry sense of humor and often cutting observational insight the album established him as a forerunner in a class of musicians who grew up in a post-genre ecosystem, equally as likely to be influenced by Ariel Pink and Animal Collective as Dolly Parton and Dwight Yoakam.
